Biomass
From rapeseed field to power socket
Electricity from biomass and biogas
By virtue of agricultural tradition in the form of rapeseed, grass and maize cultivation, the biomass and biogas industry has a superb power base in the Hamburg metropolitan region. More than 240 biogas plants large and small are in operation. Brunsbüttel boasts one of the largest facilities in the region, the NovusEnergy biomass power station that generates 60 million kilowatts of electricity per year. In Hamburg, Vattenfall generates district heating partly from biomass. In the Port of Hamburg, ADM oil mills produces biofuels. Hamburg Wasser’s sewage treatment plant produces biogas as a source of energy. Hamburg metropolitan region power utilities Lichtblick, Vattenfall, Hamburg Energie and E.ON Hanse market natural gas with an admixture of biogas.
Hamburg is of special importance as a major national and international transport logistics location. The city serves as a hub for delivering biomass from producers to modern power stations.
